BEGUM ROKEYA SHAKHAWAT HOSSAIN was born and died.

A prolific writer, educationist, social activist and champion of women’s education and liberation, ROKEYA.

She was taught both Bengali and English by her liberal elder brother Kamaruzzaman (those days rich Muslim boys and girls were taught Arabic and Persian).

After her marriage at the age of 16 with SHAKHAWAT HOSSAIN, Deputy Magistrate of Bhagalpur started a school for Muslim girls and visited bustees in Calcutta to collect students from conservative families.

After the death of her husband, ROKEYA named the school after SHAKHAWAT HOSSAIN which is now one of the best run Govt Schools in Kolkata.

ROKEYA not only wrote a number of books on women’s lib as she was the pioneer in feminist movement of Bengal, but also established Anjumaan Islamic, a platform for liberal discourse on emancipation of Muslim women.
