JL NEHRU INTRODUCED THE ‘ART’ OF BOOTH-CAPTURING IN THE COUNTRY

In first General Elections, Congress candidate Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was roundly defeated from the seat of Rampur. His opponent VC Seth of Hindu Mahasabha was declared victorious by a massive margin of 10,000 votes and the victory was announced over loud-speakers. And Hindu Mahasabha staged a victory procession too, to celebrate it, led by the winner VC Seth.

News of Kalam’s defeat was relayed to UP CM Govinda Ballabh Pant in Lucknow, then wired to PM Nehru in Delhi. Nehru was so furious that he lost his mental balance, ordered UP CM to reverse the defeat by hook or crook otherwise he must resign by that evening. GB Pant told Director (Information) SN Tandon to rush to Rampur and tell the DM to reverse the defeat somehow. When the Director warned him of fierce riots, GB Pant told him, Nehru has ordered that.. let the country go to hell, it had to be done…

Order was conveyed to DM of Rampur, City Kotwal was told to bring VC Seth to DM’s Office while he was busy in celebrations. When DM conveyed to Seth, counting would be repeated even in absence of his polling agents, Seth strongly protested. He too, was conveyed Nehru’s instructions… let the country go to hell, Kalam must win… DM said, his job itself was in danger.

In those days, ballot boxes used to be allotted to different candidates / parties without any identification marks. So it was very easy to mix ballot papers of both/all boxes, votes for Hindu Mahasabha were mixed with Congress votes and Kalam was declared winner.

Applying same methodology, defeated Nehru was made to win by 2000 votes in Phulpur, Allahabad against winning candidate Prabhudatt Brahmachari of Hindu Mahasabha. At least 12 Congress candidates were declared winners by this trick. Owing to partition, fierce riots and blood-bath, people were very angry with Congress and they stood no chance to win. Nehru invoked nefarious means of booth/vote capturing to remain PM.
